What This School Does Well
The school excels at making every child feel welcome and supported, regardless of background or starting point. Teachers have strong subject knowledge and have recently improved the curriculum to help pupils learn better, with particular strength in reading and support for pupils learning English as an additional language. The school creates a calm, respectful community where pupils from different backgrounds work together as 'pioneers' and feel safe enough to share their worries and ambitions.
Key Strengths
- Ambitious curriculum with secure subject knowledge from teachers, recently improved to help pupils recall previous learning more effectively
- Strong focus on reading with well-trained staff implementing phonics curriculum and good support for pupils who speak English as an additional language
- Excellent pastoral support and tenacious work to improve attendance, with staff helping remove barriers to school attendance
- Pupils display kindness, respect and understanding of British values with a strong sense of community
- Very good care and support for pupils with SEND, with accurate identification of needs and appropriate support provided
Areas for Improvement
- Pupils in key stages 1 and 2 do not have enough high-quality opportunities to develop writing skills across the curriculum, affecting writing stamina and quality of work
- Teachers do not consistently address errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar in pupils' writing
- Staff sometimes do not adapt teaching precisely enough for pupils with SEND, and pupils occasionally over-rely on adult support rather than learning independently
Safeguarding
Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with school staff creating an open and positive culture around safeguarding that puts pupils' interests first.
