Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2026 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

The school has worked hard to turn things around since its last inspection. Teachers now deliver well-planned lessons with clear learning goals, and the school has introduced a strong phonics programme that is helping children learn to read. The school does an excellent job of understanding each child's individual needs and providing tailored support, particularly for pupils with special educational needs.

Key Strengths

  • Implemented a well-structured, cohesive curriculum with clear progression in learning
  • Established consistent phonics teaching that is improving pupils' early reading skills and confidence
  • Developed effective procedures for identifying and supporting pupils with SEND
  • Created a more positive school culture with regular professional discussions among staff about curriculum improvement
  • Teachers now demonstrate better subject knowledge and understanding of individual pupils' needs

Areas for Improvement

  • Assessment procedures for checking pupils' learning are still at an early stage and not fully established
  • Need to gather more evidence of the impact of curriculum changes on pupils' overall achievement
  • Leadership and management standards remain unmet despite progress made
  • Need to demonstrate sustained improvements over a longer period of time

Birtley House Independent School is a special school for pupils aged 5-11 with SEND that has made significant progress addressing weaknesses identified at the last inspection, though some standards remain unmet.
