What This School Does Well
Barlows Primary School excels at developing well-rounded citizens through a rich curriculum that celebrates diversity, culture and personal development. Children are supported well in the early years and all pupils benefit from strong pastoral care in a safe, positive environment where behaviour is good and pupils are eager to learn. The school offers excellent enrichment opportunities including international links, sporting activities and cultural experiences that broaden pupils' horizons.
Key Strengths
- Pupils make good progress in reading and enjoy a wide range of literature across the school
- Children in Nursery and Reception receive skilled support and gain a valuable head start to their education
- Pupils' behaviour is good - they are polite, self-confident and look after one another and their school
- The school curriculum is well-designed with diverse opportunities including links with a school in Nepal, regular trips, and Spanish language learning
- Pupils are protected and cared for very well with effective safeguarding arrangements in place
Areas for Improvement
- Teaching quality is inconsistent and gaps in pupils' mathematics and writing skills are not tackled successfully
- The most able pupils are not challenged enough and do not receive work tailored to stretch their abilities
- Achievement of disadvantaged pupils is patchy - pupil premium funding is not always planned and reviewed effectively
- Leaders and governors lack clear, measurable plans and targets to evaluate school performance accurately
- While attendance is improving, not all pupils attend as much as they should
Safeguarding
Safeguarding arrangements are effective - the school has well-trained staff, thorough pre-employment checks, regular staff training, proper recording and sharing of concerns, and internet filtering in place.
Extracurricular Activities
School links with Nepal, regular school trips, philosophy activities, cooking, dance, Spanish language learning, opera performances, Black history weeks, fair trade activities, sports and PE activities
Barlows Primary School requires improvement after declining from its previous Outstanding rating. Actions taken by leaders and governors have not been sufficient to sustain pupils' outcomes, with particular concerns about achievement gaps and inconsistent teaching quality.
