What This School Does Well

Ashton Primary provides a warm, inclusive community where children feel genuinely cared for and enjoy coming to school. Staff handle behaviour consistently, creating a calm environment where bullying is rare and quickly addressed. The school offers excellent enrichment through clubs, trips and activities that develop pupils's talents and broaden their horizons, while ensuring disadvantaged pupils get equal access to these opportunities.

Key Strengths

  • Strong safeguarding culture with clear processes to keep pupils safe and identify concerns quickly
  • Effective support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, helping them make good progress
  • Excellent personal development programme building pupils' understanding of different cultures, healthy relationships and British values
  • Well-planned enrichment activities and trips designed to broaden all pupils' experiences, including disadvantaged pupils
  • New leadership team taking decisive action to improve curriculum and teaching, particularly in reading, writing and mathematics

Areas for Improvement

  • Achievement in reading, writing and mathematics is below national average, particularly by Year 6 and in the Year 1 phonics screening check
  • Curriculum design is not yet secure enough in all subjects to ensure pupils grasp key knowledge reliably
  • Teachers' checks on what pupils know are not consistently spotting and addressing gaps in learning
  • Governing body needs to strengthen quality assurance to better understand the impact of curriculum weaknesses on pupil progress

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and concerns are actively identified and managed, resulting in pupils feeling safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Ultraviolet dodgeball, musical instrument learning, clog dancing, local heritage visits and trips, community charity work

Ashton Primary School provides a safe, inclusive environment where pupils feel valued and enjoy learning. However, the school is working to improve curriculum design and teaching quality to raise achievement in key subjects.
