Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Ashfield Valley has created a welcoming, inclusive environment where all pupils - regardless of their background or additional needs - make good progress. The school has strong relationships between staff and pupils, positive attitudes to learning, and has successfully tackled key weaknesses from the previous inspection through focused initiatives in reading and mathematics.

Key Strengths

  • Good teaching has improved pupils' progress and achievement in reading, writing and mathematics
  • Targeted support for pupils in English and mathematics prepares them well for the next stage of learning
  • Very few gaps between different groups of pupils - those with special educational needs, pupil premium pupils, and those with English as an additional language all make similar progress to their peers
  • Pupils have good behaviour, feel safe in school and are enthusiastic learners
  • School has successfully addressed weaknesses identified in the previous inspection

Areas for Improvement

  • Inconsistencies in progress between different year groups and subjects due to recent staffing changes - not all work matches pupils' needs fully
  • Feedback to pupils is not yet consistent - teachers do not regularly tell pupils how to improve and give them time to respond
  • Some teachers not consistently challenging the more able pupils or supporting the less able appropriately
  • Subject leaders and new staff not yet making strong enough contribution to improving learning quality
  • Provision for pupils from Eastern Europe with very little English not yet meeting their needs fully

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - parents and staff are confident the school is a safe place, pupils know about different types of bullying and how to stay safe online, and staff respond quickly to any incidents.

Ashfield Valley Primary School is a good school that has made significant improvements since its last inspection, with good teaching securing strong progress in pupils' achievement. The school serves a diverse community with most pupils speaking English as an additional language.
