Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's February 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Ashbrook Infant School creates a caring, nurturing environment where children feel safe and enjoy learning. The early years provision is particularly strong, helping young children develop language skills and independence. Reading instruction is systematic and well-supported, with most pupils making good progress.

Key Strengths

  • Early years provision is good with a clear focus on language development and independence
  • Most pupils learn to read well with systematic phonics teaching and good support for struggling readers
  • The school is inclusive and provides prompt identification and additional support for pupils with special educational needs
  • Pupils feel safe and have positive relationships with supportive staff
  • The school prioritizes attendance and takes appropriate action to support families

Areas for Improvement

  • Curriculum activities in some subjects don't help pupils learn key knowledge - they remember what they did rather than what they learned
  • Systems to check how well pupils remember curriculum content are not rigorous enough
  • Behaviour systems are new and not yet consistently implemented by all staff
  • Pupils lack age-appropriate understanding of diversity and British values
  • Governors' checks on school improvements are not rigorous enough to provide full oversight

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with an open and positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Learning to ride scooters, visits to the pantomime, whole-school assemblies

Ashbrook Infant School is a caring community where pupils feel safe and enjoy coming to school. However, the school requires improvement in the quality of education, behaviour, personal development, and leadership.
