Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

The school does an excellent job with younger children - Nursery and Reception pupils make good progress because they receive good teaching and lots of varied activities. The Rainbow Room is a real strength, helping children who need extra support with their emotions and attitudes to learning. Overall, pupils are happy at school, feel safe and behave well.

Key Strengths

  • Nursery and Reception children make good progress with good quality teaching
  • Behaviour is good and pupils feel safe at school
  • The Rainbow Room provides excellent support for pupils needing help with emotional and social development
  • Some good and outstanding teaching makes learning lively and enjoyable
  • Reading skills are improving due to recent changes in how reading is taught

Areas for Improvement

  • Work in Years 1 and 2 is not always matched to pupils' different abilities, particularly when Year 1 and 2 are taught together
  • Teachers' expectations are sometimes too low
  • Mathematics work is too focused on practice rather than problem-solving, and pupils say it is too easy
  • Writing progress is held back because pupils are not given new targets once they have achieved their current ones
  • School leaders do not have strong enough systems to check how well pupils are progressing

Safeguarding

Safeguarding procedures were examined as part of the inspection but no specific effectiveness judgement is stated in the report.

Extracurricular Activities

Almondbury Play Group, Doodles after-school club

Almondbury Church of England Voluntary Aided Infant and Nursery School requires improvement overall. While Nursery and Reception children make good progress and behaviour is good, pupils in Years 1 and 2 are not progressing well enough in reading, writing and mathematics because work is not always pitched at the right level for their age and ability.
