Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Addingham Primary School excels at creating a safe, nurturing environment where pupils are polite, respectful and feel well cared for. The school offers a rich curriculum with lots of creative, sports and cultural activities that engage pupils. Mathematics teaching has improved significantly, with pupils now making good progress and reaching higher levels.

Key Strengths

  • New headteacher and leadership team have set high expectations and improvement plans are starting to work
  • Mathematics progress and attainment have improved significantly and are now good
  • Pupils behave well, feel safe and secure, with above-average attendance
  • Rich and vibrant curriculum with many creative, active and sporting opportunities
  • Strong community partnerships helping pupils understand spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues

Areas for Improvement

  • Progress in writing is too variable and not enough pupils reach higher levels in writing at the end of Key Stage 1 and 2
  • Most able pupils do not always receive work that is challenging enough
  • Pupils do not have enough opportunities to write at length, particularly outside English lessons
  • Pupils rarely get time to respond to teachers' written feedback
  • Reception outdoor areas lack resources and activities to extend early writing and number skills

Safeguarding

Safeguarding was not explicitly evaluated as effective or ineffective in this report, though procedures were examined during the inspection.

Addingham Primary School requires improvement overall. While the new leadership team is driving positive changes and behavior is good, pupils' progress varies too much across the school, particularly in writing.
