What Estyn said
Estyn's report on its March 2025 inspection summarises Aberdare Park Primary like this:
"Aberdare Park Primary is a welcoming and inclusive school. Leaders and staff build strong school community relationships. They have a firm commitment to continuous improvement. This positively impacts pupils’ learning and well-being. Leaders set high expectations and foster a purposeful team ethos. Leaders and staff effectively promote their vision, ‘Every child, every opportunity, every day,’ ensuring a focus on individual pupil needs, monitoring their progress carefully and providing effective support where needed. Most pupils make good progress, including those with additional learning needs (ALN) and those affected by poverty. Leaders and staff have high expectations for pupils’ behaviour and learning, which results in most pupils developing respectful relationships with pupils and staff."
"Teachers plan engaging lessons and pupils are enthusiastic learners. From an early age, most pupils communicate well, ask thoughtful questions, and develop into articulate speakers. Their reading and writing skills progress well, and by the time they leave the school, pupils are fluent readers and effective writers who apply their skills independently across all areas of the curriculum. Pupils develop their numeracy skills effectively, with older pupils explaining their reasoning clearly. Pupils’ digital skills improve effectively over time. Leaders and staff consistently and effectively model the Welsh language, helping most pupils develop their confidence in speaking Welsh. Pupils contribute their ideas to teachers’ plans for learning, but a minority of teachers over-direct lessons, limiting opportunities for pupils to build on their independent learning skills, and opportunities for pupils to influence how and what they learn. Many teachers provide clear targets and constructive feedback, which helps most pupils understand their strengths and how they can improve their work."
"The school’s curriculum is broad and balanced, and teachers use learning experiences to support pupils to understand historical, moral, and social issues, including diversity and climate change effectively. The school values pupil opinions on aspects of its work, and leadership opportunities boost their confidence and collaborative skills. The school effectively monitors and promotes good attendance and punctuality. Leaders provide staff with useful professional learning and are beginning to provide opportunities for staff to share effective practice across the school. Leaders carry out worthwhile evaluations of the school’s work but they do not always focus sharply enough on the impact of school improvement on pupils’ progress. Governors actively support the school to ensure that there is a secure and effective culture of safeguarding."
Estyn made 2 recommendations: (1) Refine evaluation processes to focus closely on the impact of improvements on pupils’ progress; (2) Further develop opportunities for pupils to influence what and how they learn.
