What Estyn said
Estyn's report on its May 2025 inspection summarises Ysgol Y Gelli like this:
"Ysgol Y Gelli is a caring, inclusive and familial community in which leaders have developed a clear vision to create a happy learning environment. Strong working relationships between staff and pupils create a sense of belonging and respect. Staff identify pupils' needs and support them to develop positive attitudes to learning. From the very beginning, pupils are curious and confident when facing challenges. Most work well together and show empathy. Most pupils make sound progress in their literacy, numeracy and digital skills."
"Pupils' listening and communication skills are strong and they discuss their work intelligently and confidently. Many pupils read and write effectively in both Welsh and English. Pupils' mathematical understanding and digital skills develop robustly. However, the provision does not enable pupils to apply their skills cohesively in a rich range of activities across the curriculum. Teachers have begun to develop a curriculum that covers the areas of learning and experience to offer a breadth of experiences to pupils. However, the vision for the curriculum has not been developed fully and, as a result, there are no purposeful opportunities for pupils to apply their skills in a range of stimulating experiences across the curriculum."
"Across the school, teachers plan purposeful opportunities for pupils to work independently on their tasks. The strong working relationship means that pupils respond in a timely manner to feedback to improve their work. However, the provision does not enable pupils to make decisions about how to learn and present their work. As a result, pupils do not have opportunities to develop into fully independent and curious learners. Leaders have a sound understanding of the school's strengths and areas for improvement. The acting headteacher gains the views of pupils, parents and governors and acts on the findings in a timely manner."
Estyn made 2 recommendations: (1) Develop a stimulating curriculum that enables pupils to apply a full range of skills purposefully in their work across the curriculum; (2) Provide opportunities to challenge pupils to make independent choices about their learning.
