What Estyn said

Estyn's report on its February 2025 inspection summarises Ysgol Y Fro Llangyndeyrn like this:

"The acting headteacher provides a homely and Welsh ethos for pupils to nurture their well- being and enjoy their learning in an inclusive environment. She is supported suitably by a governing body which ensures that the school is an important part of the community. However, members of the body do not undertake their duties purposefully enough, for example in working with leaders to monitor and evaluate teaching and learning. This means that they do not have enough information to support and challenge teachers to identify what the school is doing well and what it needs to do to improve. One safeguarding issue came to light during the inspection."

"Teachers have a relevant vision that supports pupils to be happy at school and deepen their knowledge and understanding in a suitable range of learning contexts. The learning areas are interesting places where teachers introduce activities that motivate pupils to learn appropriately. Overall, a majority of pupils make steady progress in their skills. However, a minority of pupils do not achieve to the best of their ability across the areas of learning, particularly in their writing and numeracy skills. Teachers have a positive working relationship with pupils and guide them to learn well."

"They provide consistent support to pupils, which nurtures their attitudes to learning appropriately. On the whole, teachers’ expectations of what pupils are able to achieve are not always high enough and they do not challenge them to achieve work of the standard expected of them. Teachers are beginning to provide a curriculum that develops pupils’ skills constructively over time, but this is in its early days. The school works well with parents and members of the community and it is an important part of the local area. This supports pupils to appreciate the Welsh language, along with local and national history and traditions."

Estyn made 5 recommendations: (1) Address the safeguarding issue raised during the inspection; (2) Ensure consistent and sustained leadership for the school; (3) Improve self-evaluation and planning for improvement procedures to strengthen provision and raise standards; (4) Plan provision that ensures the range and breadth in all areas of learning to support pupils to make progress in their skills; (5) Raise teachers’ expectations to challenge pupils to achieve to the best of their ability.
