What Estyn said

Estyn's report on its November 2024 inspection summarises Ysgol Treferthyr like this:

"Ysgol Treferthyr is a successful learning community that celebrates pupils' Welshness, courtesy, respect and achievement extremely well. The headteacher offers clear and wise leadership and appreciates everyone's efforts in contributing to pupils' complete education. Staff are committed to ensuring a high quality of care and wellbeing for pupils across the school, in a homely and supportive learning atmosphere. This has a strong influence on pupils' attitudes towards each other and to others within and beyond the school. Staff model language purposefully and enthusiastically which has a positive effect on pupils' oral skills from a young age. They cooperate successfully to plan a range of stimulating learning and play experiences for pupils."

"Most pupils develop knowledge, understanding and skills that are appropriate to their ages and starting points successfully. For example, most develop their oral and reading skills skilfully, by contributing purposefully to class discussions and expressing their views clearly and maturely. However, there are few opportunities for pupils in the upper classes to develop their numeracy skills effectively across the curriculum. Overall, teachers provide regular opportunities for pupils to work independently and cooperate with each other to solve challenges and complete projects. However, as pupils progress through school, there are few opportunities for them to make choices about how to present their work. Provision for supporting the learning skills of pupils with additional learning needs is effective."

"As a result, these pupils make good progress over time against their targets and previous achievements. The school's self-evaluation and quality assurance arrangements are thorough. Members of the governing body support the headteacher and staff purposefully. They have a sound awareness of the school's strengths along with the priorities for improvement and provide an appropriate balance of support and challenge. The headteacher, with the support of staff and governors, promotes a culture of safeguarding in a highly effective and supportive way. As a result, pupils are happy and safe at the school."

Estyn made 2 recommendations: (1) Extend opportunities for pupils to develop their numeracy skills across the curriculum; (2) Provide purposeful opportunities for pupils to make choices about how to present their work.
