What Estyn said

Estyn's report on its May 2025 inspection summarises Ysgol Talhaiarn like this:

"Ysgol Llanfair Talhaiarn is an inclusive, happy and welcoming learning community that places a high priority on pupils’ health and wellbeing. Almost without exception, pupils treat each other and adults with a natural respect and courtesy which supports them to behave very well. Along with their parents, they pride themselves on having robust working relationships with staff to discuss any concerns in a familiar and safe environment. During their time at the school, most pupils, including those with additional learning needs (ALN) and those from low-income households, make good progress across a range of skills. Almost all pupils start at the school with Welsh being new to them."

"As pupils' confidence and skills develop, many make suitable progress in acquiring and using the language purposefully in their learning and play over time. They make sound progress in their mathematics and English literacy skills by the time they reach the top of the school. Staff provide pupils with a broad and interesting curriculum and consider their views sensibly about what they want to learn in relation to their learning themes. This contributes beneficially to most pupils’ positive attitudes to learning. They have a prominent voice in the life and work of the school and thrive by contributing purposefully to an appropriate range of councils, such as the ‘Cyngor Cymraeg.’ The school has appropriate processes in place for monitoring and promoting pupils’ attendance and punctuality."

"However, the rate of continuous absence of a few of the oldest pupils is too high. The headteacher provides effective leadership which gives the school a clear direction. Leaders use effective self-evaluation arrangements to highlight the school's strengths and areas for improvement. Members of the governing body support the headteacher and staff effectively and are very knowledgeable about a number of important aspects of the school. May 2025"

Estyn made 1 recommendation: (1) Improve the attendance of pupils who are continuously absent from school.
