What Estyn said
Estyn's report on its February 2025 inspection summarises Ysgol Llangelynnin like this:
"The firm leadership of the headteacher, along with the school’s conscientious staff, nurture pupils’ well-being, care and Welshness effectively. They know their pupils well and have a sound understanding of the school’s strengths and areas for improvement. The homely and inclusive feel supports pupils to adopt positive attitudes to learning. Staff work together diligently to provide a rich curriculum that stimulates and nurtures pupils’ enthusiasm. The curriculum is based on the local area and supports pupils to develop their skills beneficially."
"Staff work with parents and the community to develop pupils’ awareness of their cynefin, or local area, and provide valuable opportunities for them to celebrate their Welshness. Across the school, teachers plan purposeful learning environments to support teaching and learning effectively. Teachers work diligently to ensure that most activities engage pupils’ interest and develop a range of pupils’ skills successfully. However, teachers do not provide activities that provide sufficient challenge to pupils to stretch them to achieve to the best of their ability. Teachers use timely questioning and encouragement methods to support pupils’ progress and ensure their understanding."
"They share feedback in a timely manner which enables pupils to identify what they have done well. However, feedback does not identify the next steps in pupils’ learning effectively enough. The headteacher and staff are supported enthusiastically by governors who are fully committed to the success of the school. Members of the governing body work closely with staff to evaluate the effectiveness of provision and standards of learning. Following monitoring activities, they share information about their findings appropriately and respond promptly to what needs to be improved."
Estyn made 2 recommendations: (1) Ensure an appropriate level of challenge to support pupils to develop their skills to the best of their ability; (2) Ensure that the quality of teachers’ feedback targets the next steps in pupils’ learning effectively.
