What Estyn said
Estyn's report on its February 2025 inspection summarises Ysgol Gynradd Rhiwlas like this:
"Ysgol Rhiwlas is a warm and supportive community where staff plan effectively to provide a broad curriculum that ensures meaningful learning experiences for pupils. Provision enables pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding skills effectively across the areas of learning and experience. A strong working relationship between staff and pupils contributes to an environment that fosters pupils’ confidence and independence when learning. Staff promote the Welsh language proactively. They are strong language models and encourage pupils to use the Welsh language confidently in various situations, which leads to an obvious increase in their fluency."
"The school uses the outdoor areas effectively to improve pupils’ learning experiences. Teachers plan entertaining and stimulating activities that support the development of pupils’ literacy, numeracy and digital and music skills successfully. However, the level of challenge provided does not always respond to pupils’ needs. The school prioritises pupils’ well-being and ensures a safe and supportive learning environment. This has a positive effect on the behaviour of nearly all pupils, who treat each other and adults with respect and courtesy when working within their tasks and when playing together."
"However, the attendance of too many pupils is lower than expected. The headteacher has a clear vision which sets pupils’ well-being and progress as a priority. He is supported effectively by enthusiastic staff and governors, who work together purposefully to improve provision for pupils. As a result, nearly all pupils make sound progress in their skills."
Estyn made 2 recommendations: (1) Continue to improve pupils’ attendance; (2) Ensure an appropriate level of challenge to support pupils to develop their skills in line with their ability.
