What Estyn said

Estyn's report on its November 2024 inspection summarises Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd like this:

"Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd is an inclusive community with a strong emphasis on the well-being and development of pupils, staff and the wider community. The headteacher has a clear vision to ensure that pupils have interesting learning experiences in a stimulating and warm learning environment. A strong sense of family and belonging to a community has been established at the school. The hard- working team of teachers and assistants cooperate successfully to ensure rich provision in an inclusive and Welsh context. Staff are effective language models and promote pupils' oral skills consistently. As a result, most pupils make sound progress in their oral skills from their starting points."

"Teachers provide interesting opportunities for pupils to develop their skills effectively across the school. This means that pupils' literacy, numeracy and digital skills develop robustly. However, teachers do not plan purposeful opportunities for pupils to apply their numeracy, digital and extended writing skills across the curriculum. Teachers provide a stimulating and inclusive curriculum that develops pupils' understanding of the world and their local area successfully. As a result, pupils show positive attitudes towards their learning and respect for others. On the whole, teachers ensure a purposeful pace to lessons and use a range of visual resources to support pupils' learning."

"This engages most pupils’ interest and enables them to make good progress. However, at times, staff's tendency to over-lead limits pupils' ability to work independently and make choices about their learning. Leaders are developing an effective team of staff that focus on promoting pupils’ well-being successfully. They cooperate extremely effectively with parents and external agencies and identify the needs of pupils and their community extremely well. Well-being provision is a notable feature of the school."

Estyn made 2 recommendations: (1) Provide purposeful opportunities for pupils to apply their skills across the curriculum; (2) Provide opportunities for pupils to make independent choices about how to learn and present their work.
