What Estyn said
Estyn's report on its May 2025 inspection summarises YGG Cwm Nedd like this:
"The school is a safe, homely, happy and caring place, where staff and pupils work together effectively and show respect for each other. Most pupils are well-behaved, feel safe at school and know who to turn to when they want to talk to someone about their concerns. Staff help pupils settle in quickly when they start school and prepare them well for moving to secondary school when the time comes. The headteacher, deputy headteacher and other leaders are extremely organised and lead the school very effectively."
"They focus well on improving pupils' learning and wellbeing and want them to be proud of their community and eager to learn throughout their lives, and to do their best. Leaders know what works well in the school and what needs to be improved, and they make improvements successfully. The curriculum is broad and exciting and teaches pupils about their community and their place within Wales and the world. The school supports pupils effectively, with teachers and assistants preparing interesting tasks and experiences that help them to be eager to learn."
"As a result of the school's successful approaches to teaching, most pupils make sound progress in their literacy skills, digital competence and wider skills. Although most pupils are able to speak Welsh fluently, and staff encourage them to speak the language constantly, a few often turn to speaking English in class and at other times. Most pupils make sound progress in mathematics and numeracy but do not always have enough opportunities to use them in ‘real’ situations in other aspects of the curriculum."
Estyn made 1 recommendation: (1) Ensure that teachers provide a wide range of opportunities for pupils to apply their numeracy skills in rich contexts across the curriculum.
