What This School Does Well

Children in Early Years make excellent progress with good quality teaching that meets their individual needs. The new headteacher has made real improvements to the school and is tackling the key weaknesses. Pupils with special educational needs and disabilities receive high quality support and achieve well.

Key Strengths

  • Early Years Foundation Stage teaching is good and children make better than expected progress
  • Pupils' behaviour is good and they feel safe in school with positive relationships
  • The new headteacher has accurately identified weaknesses and made significant improvements in a short period
  • Disabled pupils and those with special educational needs receive high quality support and achieve well
  • The proportion of pupils making better than expected progress is increasing

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching quality requires improvement - not enough lessons are good or better, particularly in Key Stages 1 and 2
  • Pupils' progress is inconsistent in reading, writing and mathematics - not enough make better than expected progress
  • Teachers' feedback and marking do not always give clear guidance on how to improve
  • Pupils have gaps in phonics understanding and weak spelling skills
  • Teachers don't always use assessment information effectively to match lessons to pupils' abilities

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with positive relationships and pupils feeling safe in school.

Woodhouses Voluntary Controlled Church of England and Free Church Primary School requires improvement overall. While the new headteacher has made positive changes since January 2013, teaching quality and pupil achievement remain inconsistent across the school.
