What This School Does Well

This is a nurturing school where relationships are at the heart of everything. Children thrive in a calm, kind atmosphere where staff know them well and help them feel safe and valued. The school goes above and beyond to support families with practical help and works closely with pupils to ensure they all achieve well, regardless of their starting point.

Key Strengths

  • Early years provision is excellent - children develop strong communication and language skills and are very well prepared for Year 1
  • Reading is prioritised with staff receiving expert training in phonics teaching
  • Strong inclusive approach - pupils with special educational needs, disadvantaged pupils and those learning English as an additional language all progress well
  • Excellent behaviour and attendance with a calm, orderly environment
  • Comprehensive support for families including practical help such as breakfast provision and uniforms

Areas for Improvement

  • Writing development needs strengthening - pupils' letter formation and spelling are not yet as strong as other areas, limiting quality of written work
  • Staff do not check pupils' understanding consistently during lessons, meaning some knowledge gaps are not identified quickly enough
  • Teaching of writing is not embedded as well as reading and mathematics across the school

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - the school has created an open and positive culture of safeguarding where concerns are actively identified and managed, ensuring pupils are made safer and feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Sports clubs, music clubs, sailing trips on local canal, enrichment Fridays including cooking and sewing, pupil leadership positions, circle time for emotional support

Wood End Infant & Pre-School is a nurturing school where children make a great start to their education and achieve well. The school has strong safeguarding practices and creates a calm, kind atmosphere where pupils feel safe and valued.
