Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's December 2024 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Windmill Primary School is a warm, caring place where children form strong relationships with staff. The school has made real improvements in how it teaches reading and has introduced an ambitious new curriculum to help pupils learn more. Recent additions of clubs and activities mean children have lots of chances to enjoy learning together.

Key Strengths

  • Strong phonics teaching with regular staff training and consistent monitoring of pupil progress
  • New ambitious curriculum that is well-designed and starting to improve pupils' knowledge recall
  • Very warm and nurturing relationships between pupils and staff, creating an inclusive environment
  • Increased clubs and activities (sports, cooking, crafting) that engage and enthuse pupils
  • Good support for pupils with special educational needs through staff training and specialist services

Areas for Improvement

  • Teachers sometimes overload pupils with too much new information at once, particularly impacting pupils with SEND
  • Curriculum implementation is inconsistent across subjects, leaving pupils with weak knowledge in many areas
  • Behaviour expectations are not applied consistently, with some disruptive behaviour disrupting learning
  • Communication with parents and carers about school approaches needs improvement
  • Pupils lack age-appropriate understanding of British values and differences between people

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with appropriate procedures and staff training in place.

Extracurricular Activities

sports clubs, cooking clubs, crafting clubs, school council activities, pantomime trip

Windmill Primary School is a very inclusive school that has experienced significant leadership changes in recent years. While recent curriculum improvements are showing promise, pupils are not yet achieving as well as they should because teaching is not consistently effective.
