What This School Does Well

Weston Junior Academy helps pupils grow in every way - academically, personally and socially. The school is built on strong values of empathy, respect and honesty that pupils genuinely understand and live by, creating a kind, well-behaved community where any problems are sorted quickly. Staff work hard to support every child to succeed, with particularly strong provision for pupils with additional needs.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on attendance with effective support for families, resulting in attendance now in line with national averages
  • Pupils behave well with kind and respectful attitudes, supported by high behaviour expectations through shared Weston Values
  • Effective inclusion and support for pupils with SEND, who are well catered for and access the full curriculum successfully
  • Well-sequenced curriculum that identifies important knowledge and skills pupils need to learn over time
  • Engaging personal development programme including enrichment activities such as gardening, choir, arts and sporting clubs

Areas for Improvement

  • Some staff in English and mathematics do not deliver the curriculum as consistently well as leaders intend
  • Not all checks on pupils' learning are effective enough - some staff miss opportunities to extend and deepen understanding during lessons
  • Some pupils do not secure key handwriting, spelling and punctuation skills in writing before moving on to more complex work
  • Targets for pupils with SEND in pupil passports are sometimes too general and not sharply focused enough

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, concerns are actively identified and acted upon, and pupils are made safer and feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

gardening, choir, arts clubs, sporting clubs, LEGO workshops, Christmas crafts, visiting menagerie, school council, ambassador roles

Weston Junior Academy is a school where pupils grow academically, personally and socially, with leaders having suitably high aspirations. Overall, pupils make good progress and learn well, supported by a positive school culture built on strong values.
