What This School Does Well

Westgate Academy excels at making all pupils feel valued and safe. The school provides excellent emotional and behavioural support, with a dedicated hub where pupils can regulate their feelings and reset. Staff know each child well and work hard to remove barriers to learning, meaning pupils with additional needs or disadvantages get the support they require to access the same ambitious learning as their peers.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent attendance and behaviour - pupils attend regularly and conduct themselves maturely with warm relationships between staff and students
  • Strong safeguarding culture where all staff take responsibility and pupils feel safe
  • Comprehensive support for pupils' wellbeing including counselling, mentoring and emotional regulation help through the behaviour hub
  • Ambitious, well-structured curriculum that builds knowledge securely over time
  • Effective identification and support of pupils with special educational needs and disadvantaged pupils

Areas for Improvement

  • Inconsistent use of practical resources in some lessons to support understanding of foundational knowledge
  • Pupils' fluency in multiplication tables is not yet secure enough
  • Achievement for middle-attaining pupils needs more targeted practice and extension
  • Support for pupils with special needs is not consistently applied across all subjects
  • Teaching of fundamental British values could be strengthened so pupils feel more confident applying these ideas in daily life

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture of safeguarding where concerns are actively identified and managed, making pupils safer and helping them feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Trips linked to lessons, outdoor learning, musical activities, drama opportunities, sports clubs, themed curriculum weeks, online safety ambassadors, school council

Westgate Academy is a well-led school where pupils feel safe, behave respectfully and benefit from a broad, ambitious curriculum. Leaders have established strong systems for supporting all pupils, particularly those with additional needs.
