West Kirby is particularly strong in developing reading skills and has created a wonderful reading culture supported by an excellent library. Teaching in the upper years is especially effective, and the school offers a broad, engaging curriculum with rich opportunities in music and art. Areas for Improvement
- Teaching in key stage 1 is inconsistent - work is sometimes too hard or too easy for different pupils
- Writing progress is weaker than other areas, particularly in early years
- Phonics teaching is not systematic enough - below-average results in Year 1 phonics screening in 2016
- Most able pupils in key stage 1 not reaching higher levels they are capable of due to inconsistent teacher expectations
