What This School Does Well

Watermoor is a calm, welcoming school where pupils enjoy learning and feel proud to attend. Teachers use a clear, well-structured curriculum with strong phonics teaching that helps children become confident readers. The school offers excellent leadership opportunities through house captains, play leaders and librarians, helping pupils understand democracy and responsibility.

Key Strengths

  • Completely redesigned curriculum with clear learning objectives and key vocabulary taught systematically
  • Strong structured phonics programme from Nursery onwards with frequent checks to help all pupils become fluent readers
  • Effective assessment in phonics, mathematics and art to identify and tackle misconceptions quickly
  • Calm behaviour throughout the school with high expectations and good pupil conduct
  • Strong leadership from headteacher and trust support enabling continuous improvement

Areas for Improvement

  • Assessment is not used consistently well across all subjects - some teachers do not check pupil understanding effectively enough
  • Some pupils have gaps in knowledge in certain subjects because misconceptions are not addressed promptly
  • Previous cohorts did not benefit from curriculum improvements quickly enough, resulting in low 2024 outcomes
