Ward Jackson is a warm, caring school that excels at supporting all children to feel valued and included. The school provides excellent enrichment experiences - from theatre visits and seaside trips to music and residential stays - that broaden pupils' horizons and raise aspirations. Staff know pupils extremely well and provide strong pastoral care, helping vulnerable children develop confidence, resilience and independence.
Key Strengths
- Excellent inclusion and support for vulnerable pupils, including those with SEND and those known to children's social care
- Strong personal development programme with varied enrichment opportunities including theatre visits, seaside trips, music and residential experiences
- Very positive behaviour and attendance, with calm and respectful environment throughout the school
- Effective early reading and phonics teaching with strong staff training and support
- Strategic use of pupil premium and additional funding to reduce barriers to learning
Areas for Improvement
- Phonics screening outcomes in Year 1 vary and reflect low starting points for some pupils
- Attainment at higher standards in English and mathematics at key stage 2 is not as positive as leaders aspire
- Teaching occasionally does not sufficiently deepen and extend knowledge for more capable pupils
- Further improvement needed in overall attendance for all groups of pupils
