Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Veryan is a kind, caring school where your child will feel looked after and enjoy coming in - attendance is excellent. The school does particularly well at teaching reading, with strong phonics support helping children become confident readers. By the end of primary school, children are typically well-prepared in reading, writing and maths for secondary school.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on reading with effective phonics teaching and good results in Year 1 phonics screening checks
  • Pupils have high attendance rates above the national average, supported by strong relationships between staff and families
  • Caring, inclusive school culture where pupils look after each other and feel safe
  • Good preparation for secondary school in reading, writing and mathematics by the end of Key Stage 2

Areas for Improvement

  • Inconsistent teaching means some pupils don't learn the full curriculum well or remember what they've learned
  • Some pupils with special educational needs don't get the tailored support they need to progress
  • Writing skills need more focus - pupils make repeated errors in handwriting, punctuation and spelling that aren't corrected quickly enough
  • Personal, social and health education curriculum is new and not yet giving pupils secure understanding of topics like relationships and health
  • Some pupils struggle with behaviour when lessons don't match what they already know, disrupting their own and others' learning

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - the school has established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, and leaders actively identify and manage concerns so pupils are made safer and feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Sailing, annual school production, school garden, library leadership, fundraising activities, museum trips, beach cleaning, tree planting, community events

Veryan CofE School is a village primary school where pupils feel safe and valued, but several aspects of the curriculum and teaching need strengthening to help all pupils learn effectively.
