What This School Does Well

Upton Cross is a welcoming school where children are happy and safe with excellent behaviour. Teachers make learning engaging and interesting, helping pupils develop strong knowledge - for example, in Spanish, pupils quickly learn key language to hold basic conversations. The school provides excellent support for all learners, including those with additional needs, and offers many enriching activities to broaden children's experiences.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent behaviour in lessons and around the school with pupils motivated to learn
  • Strong teaching that makes learning engaging and clear, with particularly strong knowledge development in subjects like Spanish
  • Effective support for pupils with SEND who make good progress from their starting points
  • Comprehensive personal, social, health and economic education curriculum preparing pupils for independence
  • Caring and supportive staff creating a welcoming environment where pupils feel safe

Areas for Improvement

  • Early reading - some pupils need more planned opportunities to practise reading books that match the sounds they are learning to develop confidence and fluency
  • Evaluation of new initiatives - school improvement strategies in English and mathematics are still early in implementation, so impact is not yet fully understood
  • Communication with parents - some parents are unclear about the impact of recent site reorganisation changes on their children's education

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with staff creating a culture where pupils know there are adults they can speak to about their worries and the school teaches pupils how to keep themselves safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Trumpet and trombone lessons, glow in the dark dodgeball, Year 6 residential, university visits for older pupils, enriching clubs (accessible to all families)

Upton Cross Primary School has maintained the good standards from its previous inspection. Pupils are happy, safe, and well-behaved, with the school providing an ambitious curriculum and strong support for all learners, including those with special educational needs.
