Teachers make learning dynamic and enjoyable through creative activities and memorable experiences. The school offers a wide range of enrichment opportunities and visits that support pupils to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding across the curriculum.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent behaviour and positive attitudes to learning, with a school culture based on 'respect for all'
  • Teachers make learning enjoyable through worthwhile tasks and memorable experiences
  • Effective governance providing strategic direction and respectful challenge
  • Well-attended extracurricular clubs and enrichment activities that enhance learning

Areas for Improvement

  • Not all teachers provide enough opportunities for pupils to write at length and develop writing stamina
  • An attainment gap still exists between boys' and girls' reading in most year groups, with some boys needing more encouragement to read for pleasure
  • Assessment systems for foundation subjects have not yet been established for all subjects
  • Teachers need to be more secure in assessing writing at greater depth

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective, with a strong culture understood by all staff, meticulous record-keeping, and pupils well-informed about staying safe through excellent teaching and experiential learning.

Extracurricular Activities

Hockey, gymnastics, orchestra, science fair, Big Bang science event at National Exhibition Centre, book talk lessons, safeguarding homework tasks, Safeside experiential learning centre visits

Uplands Junior School continues to be good, with strong leadership that has successfully improved pupil progress and maintained educational quality since the last inspection in 2012.
