Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's February 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

University of Liverpool has made reasonable progress in tailoring its apprenticeship to meet individual learners' needs and workplace roles, allowing apprentices to apply their learning directly in clinical settings. The university has significantly improved support for apprentices through increased contact with supervisors and skills coaches, as well as better engagement with employers through regular progress updates and online events. Most apprentices now make expected progress and those who complete their apprenticeship go on to secure employment with career advancement or further study.

Key Strengths

  • Curriculum now aligns well with apprentices' individual job roles, enabling them to apply learning directly at work - for example, apprentices in haematology develop pain management protocols and those in mental health conduct clinical discussions about medication
  • Strengthened apprentice support through breakfast club meetings with lecturers, increased contact time with supervisors and skills coaches, and improved employer engagement with regular progress updates
  • Enhanced quality assurance procedures with improved progress review forms, clear improvement action plans, and stronger accountability mechanisms through the degree apprenticeship strategic group

Areas for Improvement

  • Too many apprentices leave before completing their apprenticeship, though achievement rates have slightly improved for those who remain
  • Action plans for apprentices who fall significantly behind are too vague and do not focus sufficiently on specific knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for quick catch-up
  • Limited detail on ensuring all remaining 65 apprentices can complete successfully following the decision to stop new enrollments

Extracurricular Activities

Breakfast club meetings with lecturers, online events for employers

University of Liverpool is a higher education institution offering a level 7 advanced clinical practitioner integrated degree apprenticeship. Following a 'requires improvement' rating in February 2024, this monitoring visit in February 2025 assessed progress on key areas for improvement.
