Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's February 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

University of Brighton excels at partnering with employers to design relevant, high-quality training that prepares apprentices for real work from day one. Apprentices gain practical expertise quickly through simulated environments and real-world placements, with most going on to secure employment, promotions, or further study. The university provides flexible, ambitious pathways for working adults and those with personal responsibilities who want to advance their careers.

Key Strengths

  • Apprentices demonstrate high professional standards, integrity, and confidence in applying knowledge and skills in real work settings -
  • Strong partnerships with employers who co-design training and continuously improve the apprenticeship experience -
  • Staff use their expertise effectively, including simulated environments and real-world placements, helping apprentices quickly become experts -
  • Apprentices achieve very well, with most securing sustained employment, promotions, or progressing to further training -
  • Effective identification and support for apprentices needing extra help, including reasonable adjustments and specialist assistance

Areas for Improvement

  • Staff need training on how extremism and radicalisation relate to apprentices' job roles, particularly for those outside health and social work -
  • Feedback to apprentices is not consistently detailed enough about specific steps needed to improve work and skills -
  • Employers are not sufficiently involved in designing curriculum for all apprenticeships -
  • Managers cannot separate apprenticeship data from undergraduate study in performance metrics like attendance and staff training

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, though some apprentices outside health and social work lack detailed understanding of how extremist views pose risks to their job roles.

Extracurricular Activities

Various activities beyond apprenticeship mentioned but few apprentices can participate due to job and training demands

University of Brighton is a higher education institution offering apprenticeship training at higher levels, including integrated degrees, with approximately 650 apprentices across programmes such as nursing, occupational therapy, and chartered town planning. The university has been rated as Good overall with Outstanding behaviour and attitudes from apprentices.
