Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Thomas Middlecott Academy excels at caring for its pupils - staff know them extremely well and provide excellent support for those who need help with behaviour or learning. The school offers an ambitious curriculum and has made real improvements to how pupils are welcomed each morning, with many now arriving early and ready to learn. Pupils with additional needs receive particularly thoughtful and tailored support that helps them access the same high expectations as their peers.

Key Strengths

  • Strong pastoral care with staff who know pupils extremely well and provide skilled support for behaviour regulation
  • Ambitious and well-structured curriculum with excellent provision for pupils with SEND
  • Effective behaviour management approach creating a calm school atmosphere with low-level disruption

Areas for Improvement

  • Inconsistent application of teaching and learning strategies across subjects, with some staff not regularly checking pupils' understanding or identifying learning gaps
  • Variable quality of subject leadership, particularly in some newer subject leaders who need more training and support
  • The reading programme (DRET reads) taught inconsistently, limiting impact on reading fluency and engagement
  • Attendance rates for some pupils, including disadvantaged pupils, remain below expected levels

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective and the school has created a positive culture around safeguarding that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Trips, enrichment opportunities, broad range of sporting activities, trust-wide events including summer cup, curriculum ambassadors, change makers roles

Thomas Middlecott Academy requires improvement in the quality of education, though behaviour, personal development, and leadership are good. The school has made progress since the last inspection but faces challenges with inconsistent teaching implementation across subjects.
