What This School Does Well

The Sherwood School helps all pupils, including those with additional needs and those learning English as an additional language, make good progress and achieve above average results. Teaching is engaging and well-organised, with teachers building positive relationships that inspire pupils to do well. The school provides excellent care and creates an inclusive community where pupils feel safe and supported.

Key Strengths

  • Pupils achieve above average standards in English and mathematics by end of Year 6
  • Teaching is lively and engaging, capturing pupils' interest with imaginative lessons
  • Disabled pupils and those with special educational needs receive good support and make similar progress to classmates
  • Pupils behave well and feel safe because they know adults care for them
  • School leaders are ambitious with high expectations and have brought about improvements since the previous inspection

Areas for Improvement

  • Not enough outstanding teaching to secure outstanding outcomes for all pupils
  • Curriculum planning does not always show how lessons build on previous learning, particularly in science
  • Teachers do not always use progress information consistently to plan lessons meeting different learning needs, especially in mathematics
  • Marking does not always provide enough detail about what pupils need to do to improve, with too few opportunities for pupils to correct their work

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective. Pupils feel safe inside and outside school because of the school's actions to keep them safe, and they have a good understanding of different types of bullying and safety risks.

The Sherwood School is a good school where pupils achieve well in reading, writing and mathematics, reaching above average standards by the end of Year 6. The quality of teaching has improved and is good, with pupils behaving well and feeling safe in a caring school community.
