What This School Does Well

The Sele School is a nurturing place where all pupils are valued and supported to succeed. Teachers work consistently to deliver lessons well and quickly help pupils who fall behind, particularly with reading. The school offers a broad curriculum with plenty of activities beyond lessons, helping pupils develop confidence and skills for their future.

Key Strengths

  • Thoughtfully constructed curriculum with expanded subject choices including French and English Baccalaureate subjects
  • Effective support for pupils with SEND, with timely reading interventions and early identification of needs
  • Strong pastoral systems and positive behaviour, with pupils showing respect and celebrating difference
  • Well-designed 'electives' programme that broadens pupils' horizons and develops skills beyond the standard curriculum
  • Supportive sixth form with individualised support and strong student progression

Areas for Improvement

  • High levels of persistent absence for some pupils, causing them to miss important learning and impacting achievement
  • Teachers sometimes fail to challenge pupils ready for more complex learning, leading to slower progress through the curriculum
  • Board of trustees has vacant positions, limiting expertise for strategic planning and school oversight

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with strong culture and systems in place to keep pupils safe.
