Ofsted's report card, in its own words
What it's like to be a pupil at The Grange Primary School
Pupils at The Grange Primary School are supported by their dedicated and caring school community of leaders and staff. The school typically has a calm and orderly environment. Staff set clear rules and expectations. This means that most pupils behave well and bullying is rare. Pupils have chances to make positive contributions to the school and local community. For example, school council members helped to create a ‘rainbow walk' in the playground. Some older pupils take part in community work such as visiting a local residential home. Pupils are typically well educated and cared for. They feel safe in school. Younger children successfully learn and play in the well-resourced early years unit. Staff ensure that pupils are purposefully equipped with a range of basic skills. As a result, pupils are well prepared for the next steps in their education. This includes pupils with barriers to their learning. Leaders and staff have improved the curriculum and how they check pupils' learning. This is having a positive impact on pupils' achievement, particularly for younger pupils. However, achievement is not as consistent for key stage 2 pupils because they have more gaps in their learning. Many pupils do not attend as often as they should. This means that they miss important learning and do not achieve as well as they could. Leaders use appropriate strategies to support improvements in attendance. Despite this, attendance is not increasing for all pupils. Pupils generally enjoy their learning. They have access to a range of enrichment activities. These include extra-curricular clubs such as multi-sports, computing and board games clubs. The school extends the enrichment offer to the parents and carers of pupils. ‘Welcome Wednesday' invites families from different year groups into the school. ‘Food Friday' involves community cooking and food. This helps both pupils and their families to feel that they belong.
What Ofsted says the school should do next
- Leaders should continue their work to identify and close gaps in pupils' knowledge and skills so that they attain more highly, particularly pupils in key stage 2.
- Leaders should ensure that they sustain their efforts to improve pupils' attendance so that all pupils attend regularly and do not miss out on important learning.
