The Edge Academy excels at helping pupils who have experienced educational disruption and exclusion to rebuild their confidence and sense of belonging. The school combines rigorous support with enriching experiences - from practical vocational training to creative projects and overnight residentials - that help pupils see themselves differently and develop real hope for their future. Staff relationships are warm and respectful, behaviour is calm and purposeful, and almost all pupils progress successfully to college, apprenticeships or employment.
Key Strengths
- Strong culture of respect, safety and belonging where pupils feel valued and motivated to succeed
- Exceptional personal development programme including the 'connect' initiative, overnight residentials and enrichment activities that build confidence and character
- Highly effective reading intervention that helps struggling learners secure foundational skills quickly
- Excellent reintegration and outreach work with high success rates for pupils returning to mainstream education
- Comprehensive careers education and support resulting in very low numbers of pupils not in education, employment or training
Areas for Improvement
- Some teaching adaptations are not precise enough, making learning harder for certain pupils
- Pupils need more opportunities to practise reading across different subjects and to read for pleasure to embed fluency and comprehension
- In a small number of cases, curriculum adaptations in the classroom do not consistently support pupils' learning as well as they could
