What This School Does Well

Your child will come to school happy and eager to learn in a warm, supportive environment where good behaviour is celebrated. The school excels at teaching reading and provides excellent support for children with additional needs. Staff carefully check what each child knows and adapt teaching to help them make progress.

Key Strengths

  • Effective early reading programme with phonics teaching that helps most pupils become confident readers
  • Strong support for pupils with special educational needs - curriculum is well-adapted and parents are involved in reviewing progress
  • Broad and ambitious curriculum that is carefully ordered so pupils build on previous learning
  • Positive behaviour and strong sense of community, with pupils motivated by house points and school values
  • Good attendance with effective support to help pupils when absence patterns emerge

Areas for Improvement

  • Some teachers lack subject expertise in certain subjects (such as art), which limits how deeply pupils can develop their knowledge and skills
  • Teaching in Reception Year does not focus sharply enough on building children's vocabulary and language development
  • Routines in Reception Year are not always strong enough to ensure children listen intently during lessons

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective.

Extracurricular Activities

Sports clubs, arts and crafts, gardening club, mock trial, forest school, buddy system, voting activities, local care home visits, litter picking

The British School has maintained good standards since its previous inspection in 2020. Pupils are happy, eager to learn, and achieve well in a warm, positive atmosphere with high expectations for behaviour.
