Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

The college excels at teaching practical skills through expert instructors who draw on real industry experience. Students benefit from thoughtfully planned curriculums that build knowledge step-by-step, strong support for students with high needs including community work placements, and close partnerships with employers to ensure courses teach the skills people actually need in their careers.

Key Strengths

  • Teachers are subject experts who use industry knowledge to enrich teaching and prepare students for workplace environments
  • Well-designed and sequenced curriculums enable students to build knowledge incrementally and achieve well
  • Students with high needs receive strong support with meaningful work towards their EHC plan targets, including community conservation projects
  • Leaders work effectively with employers and local stakeholders to identify skills needs and design relevant courses
  • Students and apprentices develop confidence, resilience and character through purposeful learning activities

Areas for Improvement

  • Students in business and sports have limited access to real work environments and low participation in external work experience
  • Young apprentices do not have the same tutorial opportunities as younger students to discuss age-relevant topics
  • Students and apprentices have only superficial understanding of how to stay safe from radicalisation and extremism, with limited reinforcement of this learning
  • Stakeholder engagement in curriculum design is less developed in some areas such as level 1 automotive, access to higher education, ESOL and the T level in education

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - students and apprentices enjoy safe and purposeful environments across all campuses, with security staff helping them feel reassured and welcome.

Extracurricular Activities

Work experiences and placements, conservation projects in local community, visits and guest speakers, T-Level early years placements in early years and community settings

The Bournemouth and Poole College is a good further education provider with two main campuses offering a wide range of programmes from entry level to level 6, including vocational courses, T levels, apprenticeships, and specialist provision for students with high needs.
