What This School Does Well

Starcross has created a happy, welcoming environment where pupils behave well and enjoy coming to school. The school excels at teaching reading from the earliest years, with children developing strong confidence and fluency. The exciting range of enrichment experiences - from emergency services visitors to trips to London - gives children a well-rounded education that prepares them for life in modern Britain.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on reading with effective teaching methods that build pupil confidence and fluency
  • Well-considered personal development provision with age-appropriate understanding of healthy relationships
  • Excellent early years provision with a 'flying start' program featuring warm relationships and well-planned learning activities
  • Expanded enrichment opportunities with 35 experiences for pupils before leaving the school
  • High staff morale with shared commitment to school aspirations despite significant changes

Areas for Improvement

  • Inconsistent curriculum design and implementation across subjects, hindering some pupils' achievement
  • Insufficient assessment systems to identify and address gaps in pupils' knowledge, particularly in grammar and multiplication facts
  • Some younger pupils in Key Stage 1 struggling to maintain concentration and develop key learning skills
  • Communication with parents about changes, particularly regarding SEND provision, has been inadequate

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

Extracurricular Activities

Trip to London, visitor sessions with emergency services members, 35 enrichment experiences for pupils

Starcross Primary School has experienced significant staffing changes and curriculum redesign. While the school is more settled and has increased curriculum ambition in most subjects, some aspects of curriculum delivery and implementation need further development.
