Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Stanley Burnside creates a welcoming, inclusive environment where every child is valued and supported. The school has excellent systems for helping pupils with emotional and behavioural needs, resulting in improved attendance and reduced behaviour incidents. Staff know families well and parents speak highly of the care and support their children receive.

Key Strengths

  • Strong inclusive culture where every pupil is valued and supported with their individual needs
  • Effective safeguarding with open culture and clear systems in place
  • Good behaviour across school with low bullying incidents and high staff expectations
  • Well-designed personal development programme teaching respect, tolerance and healthy lifestyles
  • Strong attendance improvements through robust support systems and family engagement

Areas for Improvement

  • Significant decline in phonics screening and multiplication tables results - basic skills not secure enough
  • Inconsistent phonics teaching and limited practice time for reading and writing in lessons
  • Early years provision lacks sufficient challenge for Reception children, affecting readiness for Year 1
  • Gaps in knowledge not identified quickly enough by teachers to address misconceptions
  • Leaders and governors have not addressed academic decline with sufficient urgency

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, concerns are actively identified and managed, and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Educational visits to local places of interest, school visitors including police, RNLI and Dogs Trust, eco committee, diversity committee, health and safety committee, after-school clubs, career aspiration events

Stanley Burnside Primary School is an inclusive school where pupils are welcomed, valued, and feel safe. However, the school needs to urgently address declining basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, particularly in the early years and lower key stages.
