What This School Does Well
St Mary's University has made good progress in supporting apprentices to succeed. The university now provides clear guidance on what apprentices need to achieve, helps them understand assessment requirements early on, and ensures all apprentices have workplace mentors who help them apply their learning. Apprentices quickly become valued team members in their workplaces and use their new skills to support children and staff effectively.
Key Strengths
- Apprentices now receive clearer guidance earlier in their course on end-point assessment requirements and what evidence they need to provide
- University has reorganized apprenticeships into a central team with better oversight through the new Apprenticeship Quality Board
- All apprentices have workplace mentors who participate in regular reviews and help them apply learning practically, such as delivering training on resilience to staff
- Leaders have invested in better tracking systems and staff training to improve quality and consistency
- Most apprentices are on track to complete their apprenticeships on time and feel confident about achieving good grades
Areas for Improvement
- Mock end-point assessment interviews with tutors are not yet being conducted to help apprentices prepare
- Planned on-site workplace observations had not started at the time of the visit
- A few apprentices from earlier cohorts felt rushed at the end of their course and overwhelmed by the assessment process
- On- and off-the-job training does not always align from the start, particularly for children, young people and families practitioners apprentices
- Digital portfolio system for tracking progress was still being set up and not yet operational
