What This School Does Well

The school has made impressive improvements in a short time, particularly in supporting disadvantaged pupils so they now progress equally with their peers. Reception children get an excellent start with exciting outdoor learning. Pupils feel safe, behave well, and the school is a welcoming, harmonious community where all contributions are valued.

Key Strengths

  • Executive headteacher and governors have made significant improvements raising pupils' achievement
  • Reception class provides good start with stimulating outdoor learning environment
  • Gaps between disadvantaged pupils and peers have narrowed significantly
  • Behaviour is good and pupils feel safe
  • Reading support has been effective, with dedicated assistants helping struggling readers

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching quality remains inconsistent across year groups, affecting progress rates
  • Teachers do not challenge the most able pupils enough
  • Lessons sometimes lack pace, limiting pupil motivation
  • Insufficient opportunities for pupils to practise writing in subjects beyond English
  • Some Year 6 pupils unclear about their potential levels in tests

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - pupils feel safe, understand internet dangers, and are confident issues will be dealt with promptly by the school.

Extracurricular Activities

Breakfast club, after-school club, reading groups with peer mentoring

St Mark's Church of England Primary School requires improvement, having dropped from Good in the previous inspection. While leadership has made significant progress in the last 18 months, inconsistencies in teaching quality are limiting pupils' achievement.
