What This School Does Well

St Joseph the Worker creates a calm, happy place where children thrive as confident and respectful learners. The school has transformed its approach to teaching writing, with pupils now achieving well above national expectations. Teachers know each child in detail and use this knowledge to support learning effectively, while the wonderful outdoor learning areas give early years children first-rate opportunities to develop key skills.

Key Strengths

  • Strong Catholic ethos that shapes school life and helps pupils develop understanding of love, respect and community
  • Significant improvements in teaching of writing, with key stage 2 pupils achieving much better than peers nationally in 2016
  • High-quality outdoor learning environment for early years children, supporting language, scientific, creative and physical development
  • Steady improvement in reading teaching with better resources and staff training
  • Pupils are confident, polite and respectful citizens who feel safe and proud to attend

Areas for Improvement

  • Reading skills are not improving as fast as learning in other subjects - pupils in Year 1 did not meet phonics expectations in 2015 and 2016
  • Most able pupils not being challenged enough in writing, particularly in geography and history
  • Early years writing activities are too easy for some children, and book provision in Nursery needs improvement
  • Pupils lack clear understanding of some major UK faiths (Islam, Hinduism) and modern British culture
  • Safeguarding records need clearer logging of contact with other agencies

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective, with a strong culture of keeping pupils safe, regular staff training, prompt contact with agencies, and active governor oversight, though records of agency contact could be clearer and more systematic.

Extracurricular Activities

After-school writing club, singing at national events promoting peace and unity, gardening activities, role-playing activities, trip to France

St Joseph the Worker RC Primary School continues to be good, with strong leadership that has maintained educational quality since 2011. The school is popular with local parents, with rising pupil numbers and a calm, happy learning environment shaped by its Catholic ethos.
