Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's December 2024 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

St John's is a calm, orderly and caring school where children are happy and make friends easily. The school excels at teaching reading through a well-trained phonics programme, and Reception children have an excellent start with strong progress in a stimulating environment. The school goes beyond academics by providing enriching experiences like theatre visits and art galleries to broaden pupils' understanding of the world.

Key Strengths

  • Strong phonics programme with consistent staff training - pupils develop a love of reading and read with fluency and expression
  • Early years provision is good - children show enjoyment, independence and make strong progress in a stimulating learning environment
  • Effective support for pupils with special educational needs working closely with external agencies
  • Excellent behaviour and positive attitudes to learning - pupils are polite, follow routines and respond well to instructions
  • Clear enrichment opportunities including theatre visits, art galleries and visits to places of worship to broaden pupils' cultural understanding

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching in Years 1 to 6 sometimes lacks clarity and accuracy, leading to misconceptions that are not addressed
  • Subject-specific vocabulary is not taught securely enough - pupils do not receive adequate support to understand key subject terms
  • Teachers do not consistently check pupils' understanding before moving to new content, leaving some pupils unprepared for future learning
  • Leadership oversight of curriculum implementation is at an early stage of development in some subjects
  • Inconsistency in how the curriculum is taught across the school limits how well some pupils achieve

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective and staff keep pupils safe with prompt responses to any concerns.

Extracurricular Activities

Theatre visits, art gallery visits, places of worship visits, school council roles, scholars roles, pilots roles, range of clubs

St John's Church of England Primary School is a kind and welcoming school where pupils are happy and behave well. However, the quality of education requires improvement, particularly in Years 1 to 6, where teaching does not consistently ensure pupils learn well across all subjects.
