Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

The school has strong safeguarding practices in place and new leaders are working hard to improve the school after a difficult period. Pupils behave well around the school and are polite and respectful to each other and visitors. The school is beginning to build positive relationships with new leadership and has started putting systems in place to support vulnerable pupils.

Key Strengths

  • Safeguarding standards are met with an open culture where safety is everyone's responsibility
  • Recent behaviour policy improvements have reduced poor behaviour incidents
  • New leaders have quickly identified priorities and begun implementing changes
  • Pupils show politeness and good manners outside the classroom
  • Some external agency support is now being provided to vulnerable pupils

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils do not achieve well enough, particularly in writing, spelling, grammar and times tables
  • Teaching does not consistently challenge pupils or help them build on prior knowledge
  • Early years provision does not meet children's developmental needs
  • Attendance is too low for disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND
  • Support for pupils with additional needs is inconsistent and gaps in learning persist

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture of safeguarding where concerns are actively identified, acted upon and managed, making pupils safer and helping them feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Choir, karate, football, worship councillor roles, reading ambassador roles

St Barnabas CofE Primary School requires special measures as it is failing to provide an acceptable standard of education. New leadership has recently joined and is working to address urgent improvements needed across teaching, curriculum, achievement, and inclusion.
