What This School Does Well

This school excels at helping all children make good progress from where they start. Teachers create strong, positive relationships with pupils and use interesting activities to keep them engaged in learning. The focus on improving writing has been particularly successful, with pupils reaching above-average standards across the school.

Key Strengths

  • Pupils reach standards well above national averages, particularly in writing and mathematics at both Key Stages 1 and 2
  • Strong relationships throughout the school contribute to good attitudes to learning and positive behaviour
  • Children get off to a strong start in Early Years with well-designed activities that capture their interest
  • Teaching is good overall with some outstanding practice, and professional development has improved writing standards
  • Leadership team has created a united and effective staff and governors who challenge and support school improvement

Areas for Improvement

  • Not enough outstanding teaching to raise achievement even further
  • Marking does not consistently give pupils clear guidance on how to improve, and pupils don't always have time to respond to feedback
  • Learning support assistants are not always involved in supporting pupils' learning throughout all parts of lessons
  • Too few opportunities for pupils to practise mathematical skills in subjects other than mathematics

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - pupils feel safe, are well behaved, show courtesy and respect, and have a good understanding of how to keep safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Sports, arts, Spanish language learning (integrated throughout the school day including registration and prayer)

St Austin's Catholic Primary School is a good school where pupils make good progress from their starting points and reach standards that are often well above national averages. The school has strong teaching, good relationships, and effective leadership committed to continued improvement.
