What This School Does Well

St Augustine's is a warm, welcoming community where children from many different backgrounds thrive together. Teaching has improved significantly and pupils make good progress overall, with particularly strong results in mathematics. The school works closely with families and has very high attendance as a result of this strong partnership.

Key Strengths

  • Mathematics attainment is above the national average by the end of Year 6
  • Excellent systems track pupil progress rigorously across the school
  • The school engages extremely well with parents and carers, resulting in very high attendance
  • Pupils from different backgrounds work and play very well together in a harmonious community
  • Phonics teaching is strong with well above average results in the Year 1 reading check

Areas for Improvement

  • Writing and reading standards need to improve to match mathematics performance
  • The most able pupils are not always given sufficiently challenging work or reading tasks
  • Pupils need more opportunities to work independently and use information technology for extended learning
  • More visual and practical activities are needed to prepare pupils for writing across the school

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective; pupils say they feel safe in school and that there is no bullying.

St Augustine's is a good primary school that has improved rapidly since its previous inspection. The headteacher and senior leaders have successfully focused on improving teaching quality and raising pupil achievement.
