What This School Does Well

St Augustine's excels at creating a warm, caring community where children feel safe and valued. Reading is taught very well through expert phonics instruction, helping most pupils progress quickly. The school goes beyond academics to develop responsible, respectful community members through many enrichment opportunities and real-world projects.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent early years provision with activities that build curiosity and concentration
  • Strong phonics teaching that helps most pupils make rapid progress in reading
  • Exemplary approach to developing the whole child with many opportunities for pupils to contribute to school life and their community
  • Impeccable pupil behaviour with kind and caring relationships underpinning the school
  • Exceptional leadership at all levels with relentless focus on children's best interests

Areas for Improvement

  • Some pupils with SEND have learning gaps that are not identified with enough precision, affecting their progress
  • Teachers sometimes expect pupils with less developed phonics skills to write at a standard beyond their current ability
  • The school needs to identify precise barriers to learning for pupils at earlier stages of reading and writing so staff can address these effectively

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective and the school creates an open and positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

St Augustine's Catholic Academy is a warm and caring school in the heart of the community where pupils arrive eagerly each day and feel safe. The school has maintained good standards and continues to support all pupils, including those with special educational needs and those who speak English as an additional language, to reach their full potential.
