Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

St Anne's is particularly skilled at supporting children who speak English as an additional language and those with special needs, helping them make good progress from their starting points. Teachers create inspiring lessons with very positive relationships and high engagement from pupils. The school makes excellent use of pupil premium funding to support disadvantaged children, with those eligible actually outperforming their peers.

Key Strengths

  • Most teaching is good with examples of outstanding teaching, and teachers plan thoroughly and engage pupils effectively
  • Children in Early Years make good progress through targeted interventions in English language acquisition
  • Pupils' behaviour is very good - they are polite, respectful and show great care for the school community
  • Rigorous systems by senior leadership check teaching quality and help all teachers improve
  • Pupils eligible for pupil premium make good progress and achieve better than peers

Areas for Improvement

  • Not enough outstanding teaching across the school to enable consistently high achievement
  • Progress in English at Key Stage 2 is lower than in mathematics
  • Marking and feedback do not consistently explain next steps in learning and pupils are not given time to respond to comments
  • Pupils need more opportunities for extended writing and to develop higher-level reading skills
  • Limited opportunities for pupils to develop independence and ownership of their own learning

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - pupils say they feel safe and well cared for, with well-established and consistently applied behaviour management procedures.

Extracurricular Activities

breakfast club, booster classes, speech and language therapy support

St Anne's Catholic Primary School is a good school where children start with low levels of skill and knowledge but make good progress across the school due to well-matched activities and good teaching.
