What This School Does Well

This school genuinely cares for its pupils and creates a supportive, purposeful environment where children want to learn. Teachers have high expectations and are trained in their subjects to teach a broad curriculum well. The school goes the extra mile with trips, clubs and performances to enrich learning and help pupils develop their talents.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on reading - pupils are taught systematically to become confident, fluent readers with access to a well-loved library
  • Well-structured curriculum with clear knowledge and vocabulary identified across subjects
  • Effective support for pupils with special educational needs, identified early to ensure appropriate help
  • Positive pupil attitudes and behaviour, with a calm and purposeful learning environment
  • Good enrichment opportunities through clubs, sporting competitions, school performances, trips and residential visits

Areas for Improvement

  • Some pupils struggle to remember important knowledge from previous learning, making it harder to build on what they know
  • The refined writing curriculum is new and not yet fully embedded, leading to repeated errors in some pupils' written work going unaddressed
  • Staff need clearer guidance on which transcriptional knowledge (spelling, grammar, punctuation) pupils must learn at each stage

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with pupils knowing they can turn to trusted adults with any worries or concerns.

Extracurricular Activities

Clubs, sporting competitions, school performances, educational trips (e.g. local castle visits), residential visits, reading ambassador programme, before- and after-school club

Spaxton CofE Primary School is a small primary school where pupils appreciate the support from caring staff and enjoy coming to school. The school has high expectations and a broad, ambitious curriculum, with pupils typically learning well.
