Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Southsea Infant School excels at creating a nurturing, inclusive community where children feel safe and develop strong relationships with caring staff. The school has exceptional behaviour and attendance, with pupils taking pride in the school values. Early years provision is particularly strong, preparing children well for Year 1 through carefully shaped curriculum and rich learning environments.

Key Strengths

  • Strong behaviour, attendance and pastoral support with clear school values of being ready, respectful and safe
  • Excellent safeguarding culture where all staff take responsibility and pupils feel safe
  • Effective early years provision with children well-prepared for Year 1 and achieving good levels of development
  • Inclusive approach with specialist Starfish class for pupils with special needs and personalised support
  • Strong parent engagement through Stay and Play, Time Together sessions and coffee mornings

Areas for Improvement

  • Too many pupils not passing the phonics screening check at end of Year 1, leaving gaps in reading fluency and comprehension
  • Inconsistent quality of teaching across subjects with variability in lesson activities
  • Tasks and activities do not always allow pupils to apply and extend their learning
  • Teachers lack sufficient oversight of what tasks pupils complete and the impact on learning
  • Reading support in some lessons is not effective enough

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met with an open and positive culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and all legal requirements are fulfilled.

Extracurricular Activities

School choir, community trips, clubs, water safety session with RNLI, Portsmouth celebrating languages week, school leadership roles (Southsea Ship Captains, Eco Axolotls)

Southsea Infant School is a welcoming and friendly community where pupils have positive relationships with staff and attend regularly. However, pupils do not achieve consistently well across subjects, particularly in reading and phonics.
